The things connection

Three years ago, or more, I listened to an episode of the podcast “Boa Noite Internet”, hosted by Cris Dias, and the episode, which I am going to write about is called “As coisas do Pedro”. You can listen to it on this link https://open.spotify.com/episode/4NXFXJdirelKBLUi59J4nF?si=55RSrOkxQFKq-P9brtQGDA&utm_source=whatsapp&nd=1.

Obviously, the language is Portuguese, but I’ll explain the episode a little and the reason why I decided to write about it is that it is very interesting because it talks about things and how they can describe yourself.

Summary

This episode talks about the things that belong to Pedro, the main character. He works in advertisement and this universe connects us to things. Pedro tells us how his things express who he is, for example, his favorite books, clothes, personal objects, his house, and so on. Cris Dias called Pedro to explain the relationship that humans have with things.

Pedro and his family went to live in Miami because he was transferred by his company. Pedro had his things taken there by boat, in a container, as people do when they move to another country.

Anyway, when Pedro´s family came to Miami his things did not come there. Pedro’s life was inside a container on the way to Miami. And when he got there, he had a surprise. Something unexpected happened, there was a hurricane coming to that region where he was. Okay, I will not give a spoiler here, you can listen to all the story on the link above.

Why am I writing this?

I was thinking about this episode and how our things describe who we are. For example, you do not know someone before you come to their house for the first time. You know who this person is just by looking at their things. Their favorite books, clothes, little objects and other things describe what this person likes, and who this person is.

But the main reason for me to be writing this text now is how these things connect us. You can love what you have, or just not give a damn about them. Some people have an emotional connection to their things, as society teaches us that it is important to have things, rather than to value the things you have.

What did I learn from this podcast episode? Well, it doesn't matter what you have, this is not who you are, it is just something that belongs to you. Things come and go and they just belong to us for some time.

Conclusion

What is necessary for you? What kind of person are you? Can you identify yourself by the things you have?

I don't know for you but for me, this episode of the podcast let me think more about this and I confess I began to see little things from a different perspective, and this is an interesting reflection.
